LA Weekly: 99 Essential Restaurants 2017

Our thanks to LA Weekly for including Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant on their 2017 99 Essential Restaurants list, and thanks to Besha Rodell for her wonderful comments on our deli and pastrami. It’s a true honor!

Life is fickle. Things change. There’s not much you can count on. What can you count on? Langer’s Deli. Langer’s will never change, or at least we hope with the fiercest of hopes that it will never change. Because as citizens of L.A. we need to be able to stand in that line, we need to be seated in one of those brown vinyl booths, we need to order that pastrami sandwich and get it on that bread served by these people in this room. Since 1947, Langer’s has been delivering what many believe to be the best pastrami sandwich on Earth. Whether you go for plain pastrami on rye or the famous No. 19 with Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing is between you and your god, but either way, Langer’s gives us all something solid to hold on to in this cruel, unpredictable world. —Besha Rodell

LA Weekly’s Jonathan Gold: 99 Essential Restaurants

Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant is proud to be a part of the LA Weekly’s latest 99 Essential Restaurants list authored by Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic (and friend of Langer’s) Jonathan Gold.

Langer’s has finally become the institution it deserved to be all along: patronized by big shots, home to a radio show, beloved by the national food press, occupying a corner renamed Langer’s Square. It has become common knowledge that the late Al Langer was among the last of the great deli men, a guy who traced the contours of a properly steamed pastrami the way a great sushi chef does a fresh yellowtail….

…Bite into a Langer’s pastrami sandwich: thick slices of hand-sliced beef, glistening with peppery fat, as dense and as smoky as Texas barbecue; thick-cut seeded corn rye, hot, crisp-crusted and soft inside, with a slightly sour tang that helps tame the richness of the meat; a dab of yellow mustard as important to the whole as a sushi master’s wasabi. The fact is inescapable: Langer’s serves the best pastrami sandwich in America.

We are honored and humbled, Jonathan. The entire Langer family thanks you from the bottom of our collective heart.

LA Weekly Food Blog: Top 10 Life-Changing Restaurants

The Los Angeles Weekly’s Food Blog recently covered Food & Wine’s Top 10 Life-Changing Restaurants (we didn’t make that list) – but we were graciously included in the LAW’s LA-centric Top 10 Life-Changing Restaurant list before throwing it open to the floor (or in other words, the comments section).

F&W’s Top 10? ElBulli, The Fat Duck, Pierre Gagnaire, The French Laundry, Nihonryori Ryugin in Tokyo, Dan Barber’s Blue Hill, Mugaritz in Spain’s Basque country, Noma in Copenhagen, Italy’s Combal.Zero, and Tokyo’s Aronia de Takazawa. Lovely. So as many of us will never see the inside of most if not all of those places, how about the Top 10 Life-Changing Restaurants here in L.A.? Jitlada, Pizzeria Mozza, Urasawa, Golden Deli, Providence, Langer’s… Of course “life-changing” is a relative term. My cassoulet, your Korean BBQ. What goes on your list?
