The Faster Times: LA Sports Live Review

Phil Sandick of The Faster Times has a great review of our favorite radio program in Los Angeles, or anywhere, for that matter – LA Sports Live 10AM-2PM weekdays on 710 ESPN, hosted by Andrew Siciliano and Lakers legend Mychal Thompson. Phil even notes Mychal’s legendary penchant for free food – particularly when it comes from Langer’s:

Loyal listeners to LA Sports Live will also know that Mychal is a devotee of free food. There’s usually a lot of pastrami, etc. around, thanks to Langer’s Deli, the LA lunch spot that sponsors a noon daily point-counterpoint between Andrew and Mychal. The debate regularly involves Andrew whining, “Mychal,” as if at wit’s end with Mychal’s unorthodox opinions. Their greatest conflict may have occurred when Mychal offended Andrew by putting hot sauce on his free potato latkes instead of apple sauce.

Phil also included a couple of vintage spots from 1980s Laker broadcasts on YouTube featuring the legendary late Chick Hearn having fun with Mychal during his Lake Show glory years.

KBS World Network: Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant

Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant is featured in the latest program from Korean Broadcasting System’s KBS World Network. Produced by our friends at Radio Korea (1540 AM here in Los Angeles), our segment features a Korean-language host visiting Langer’s for the first time, learning all the inside info on our hot pastrami and how we make our sandwiches, and then sampling the product first hand. Our segment begins around 13:10.

Thank you, Radio Korea, for your support and friendship with Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant!

Lady Ducayne: Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant

Food blog Lady Ducayne recently published an account of the authoress’ first visit to Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant – despite being a native of Los Angeles!

Oh Langer’s! I feel like my Los Angeles County birth certificate is finally valid! How did I go my whole life (26 years) without visiting? . . . Soon, the sandwich I had waited my whole life to eat arrived. It was wonderful. Incredibly wonderful. Starting with the bread. Oh my goodness that bread was magic! Toasted on the edges, but soft to the bite.

Norm Langer Judges the 710 ESPN High Noon Showdown

Norm Langer was guest judge today on the 710 ESPN Langer’s Lunch High Noon Showdown with Andrew Siciliano and Mychal Thompson, and it was just a fantastic experience for all of us at Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant. As you may know, Langer’s sponsors the Langer’s Lunch High Noon Showdown every day at noon on 710AM KSPN (710 ESPN), but every couple of months, we visit the station and bring lunch for everyone there.

So today was a Langer’s Lunch day at 710 ESPN – but it was made extra-special by show producer Drew Belzer who graciously asked Norm Langer to guest judge the High Noon Showdown. We won’t divulge who won (Andrew or Mychal) – but it’s totally worth a listen by clicking here.

Norm Langer would like to sincerely thank Andrew, Mychal, Drew, Ron Mitchell, Chris Berry and everyone at 710 ESPN for their gracious hospitality and enduring friendship. What a great day for all of us at Langer’s! Thank you, 710 ESPN!

Angelenos Rite of Passage: Langer’s Deli

An interesting new blog called Angelenos Rite of Passage (mission: It all started with a conversation. Turned into a list. Now it’s a challenge. Thus begins our adventure to fully see and know the soul of Los Angeles…) included coverage of Langer’s Deli recently:

We all took our first bites, and a moment of OMG, shut the front door, glossed over us – this was unbelievable. Every pastrami sandwich before this was a joke.

Congratulations to Jonathan Gold, David Sax and Ed Levine

Congratulations are in order to Jonathan Gold, David Sax and Ed Levine – all great friends of Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant – who were winners of coveted James Beard Awards, as reported by Kevin Roderick at LAObserved.com.

We are proud of our friendships with all three individuals – Jonathan for his long-time championing of Langer’s hot pastrami on the pages of the LA Weekly, David for his recent book “Save the Deli” which courageously named Los Angeles as America’s deli capital and singled out Langer’s for distinction, and Ed for his ongoing support of Langer’s through his newest venue, SeriousEats.com.

Congratulations to all from your friends at Langer’s.

Sku’s Recent Eats: The Great Pastrami Debate – Katz’s Vs. Langer’s

Los Angeles-based food (and whiskey) review site Sku’s Recent Eats takes on the age-old Katz’s (New York) versus Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant (Los Angeles) “which pastrami is better?” debate, and we’re pleased with the outcome:

Katz’s makes a great pastrami sandwich, no doubt about it, but I’m proud to report to all you LA civic pride advocates that Langer’s is indeed better. I view Katz’s meat as the best of the deli pastrami. It is well spiced, tender and full of spicy, meaty flavor, but it is ultimately a great version of the same pastrami you get at every deli in the City. Langer’s, on the other hand, is an entirely different beast. It has very little in common with traditional, sliced deli pastramis. It’s moist and thick and almost more of a meat entree than a cold cut. Biting into a Katz’s sandwich is extremely satisfying, but biting into a Langer’s sandwich is a near religious experience.

And then there is the bread.
