Huffington Post: Best Delis in Los Angeles

The Huffington Post has released a list of the top delis in Los Angeles, and Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant is number one on the list. Here’s their introduction to the slideshow-article:

Last year, a book called “Save the Deli” by David Sax made a bold claim: “Brace yourself New York, because what I am about to write is definitely going to piss a lot of you off, but it needs to be said: Los Angeles has become America’s premier deli city.” And why not? Sax argues that while New York delis have degenerated into tourist traps, ours are “functioning” and “relevant” staples in our restaurant landscape. High five, LA! Let’s keep our matzo ball soup schmaltzy and our pastrami piled high. Here’s a round up of the best delis this city has to offer.

The Minty: Pastrami Dreams

The Minty has published an interesting take on Langer’s pastrami from the perspective of someone trying to transition away from dairy products:

This week I was telling someone about my love for pastrami. Like most Angelenos, I love Langer’s. However, I have been trying to give up dairy. I continue to eat dairy sporadically but if I can skip it, I do.

Refined Palate: Langer’s Deli

The writers of Refined Palate visited Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant again this past week, with another great eating experience immortalized in words and imagery:

#19, very famous…after 39 years of eating this sandwich I’m still impressed with the wonderful rye bread [I bought a loaf of bread and a quart of soup for tomorrow night]. The hand carved pastrami has a layer of swiss cheese with a generous portion of delicious slaw and topped with Russian Dressing.

MidtownLunch.com: Obligatory Langer’s Lunch: My Sandwich World Has Been Turned Upside Down

Every so often one of those really great, first-time-at-Langer’s stories comes along that just makes us smile. And so today, here we have one, from MidtownLunch.com, by Zach Brooks, entitled “My Sandwich World Has Been Turned Upside Down.” Here’s just the intro to set the tone:

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but before last week I had never been to Langer’s. As a Miami jew (lower case, because I’m a bad jew who loves pork way too much), whose parents were born in New York, who spent his his childhood eating at Wolfie’s (and the lesser known, kind of terrible, Pumpernickel’s), and the past 4 1/2 years living in NYC, you’d think I would have gone sooner. Like maybe the first week I moved here. Like, maybe right from the airport. Despite the pedigree, I’m no deli expert. But I am a fat man, and as such have nothing but love for pastrami and corned beef and tongue, on good rye bread, with a bit of mustard. How could I not?

LAWeekly.com: Langer’s Deli: Pastrami, Yes, But What Else?

LA Weekly’s food critic Noah Galuten (writing in the always-interesting Squid Ink food blog) has a great new article up entitled “Langer’s Deli: Pastrami, Yes, But What Else?” Good question! And so Noah and his friends paid a visit to Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant, and came up with a variety of great items to try that were not-pastrami in nature:

With rye bread as good as it is at Langer’s, isn’t it safe to assume that they can fashion some other good sandwiches as well? We’ve often wondered ourselves, but could never quite muster the courage to veer from such assured greatness. In light of this, we gathered a group of five other hungry men, and took over the corner of Langer’s Deli to find out what some of the rest of the menu had in store for us. Though to be fair, we couldn’t prevent ourselves from ordering a few pastrami sandwiches too.

Fiesta Bo: Tom Hanks Treats His Crew to Langer’s Deli

Bo Stevenson, best known among his peers as “Fiesta Bo” due to his choice of a lime-green Ford Fiesta as transportation, is the personal assistant to Academy Award-winning actor and director (and everyone’s favorite) Tom Hanks. Tom is directing his first feature since “That Thing You Do” entitled “Larry Crowne” and it’s Hanksian tradition to treat his crew to Langer’s Deli – so Bo documented the entire thing on his Flip Video as part of his campaign to capture his experience working on the film.

Langer’s wishes the best to the crew of “Larry Crowne” and sends a special thank you to Bo and Tom for their valued patronage.

And go see “Toy Story 3” by Disney/Pixar now, starring Tom Hanks!
