Departures Magazine: Hold the Mayo: An Homage to the Pastrami Sandwich

Mimi Sheraton has penned a wonderful article for Departures Magazine entitled, “Hold the Mayo: An Homage to the Pastrami Sandwich.” In it, she covers the many New York City-based options for great pastrami, including all the big historic names as well as some new ones, as well. But in it, she includes some great mentions of one non-NYC contender – Langer’s Deli:

(While in Los Angeles, I try not to miss the perfect specimens at Langer’s (704 S. Alvarado St.; 213-483-8050; langersdeli.com), where even the rye bread outshines New York’s.)

and

The only setting in which a pastrami sandwich rings true for me is that of a typical New York deli (which, in appearance, Langer’s is, in L.A.): huge; hectic; headily aromatic with whiffs of spice, garlic, brine, and steamy beef; and alive with noisy voices shouting, demanding, complaining, kibitzing.

Our sincere thanks to Mimi and Departures for these great mentions. When in Los Angeles, Mimi, please be sure to drop by and say hello. – The Langers

First We Feast: Our 5 Favorite Iconic LA Sandwiches

Erin Mosbaugh of FirstWeFeast.com has a great new piece up entitled “Our 5 Favorite Iconic LA Sandwiches,” and we’re thrilled that the Langer’s #19 made the list:

If New York was the blueprint for Jewish delis, then L.A. perfected them. The go-to move at Langer’s is what’s familiarly referred to as the #19: hot pastrami with coleslaw, Russian dressing, and Swiss. Like the much-adored Katz’s in NYC, the deli hand-carves thick, fatty pieces of pastrami, but only Langer’s serves the double-baked, caraway-flecked rye loaf that is sliced for each order. It sure didn’t hurt the deli’s reputation when L.A. Times food critic Jonathan Gold went on record saying he’d like Langer’s to cater his funeral.

Family Vacation Hub: Best Family Restaurants in LA

Our friends at FamilyVacationHub.com have published a new piece entitled “Best Family Restaurants In Los Angeles” – and we’re proud to say that Langer’s Deli was included in their selections. Thank you so much!

Although all of their food is top-notch, they are famous for their #19 Pastrami Sandwich which comes on double-baked rye bread with hand-cut hot pastrami, swiss cheese, Russian dressing and cole slaw. It is one amazing sandwich! We also love that same sandwich with turkey in place of the pastrami and you can see how delicious it looks in the picture above. There is so much to love at this delicatessen and we are sure you and the kids will enjoy all that they have to offer.

Eater.com: 38 Essential Los Angeles Restaurants

Eater.com has issued it 38 Essential Los Angeles Restaurants survey, and once again, Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant is thrilled and honored to be named to this prestigious list. Just look at the company our pastrami sandwiches are keeping!

From the listing:

Yes, the #19 pastrami sandwich is an amazing sandwich, but the pure pastrami on house-based rye is simplicity at its best. There’s a reason why people make pilgrimages to try their pastrami and even corned beef: there is no better version anywhere in town, and perhaps even in the country. Pro tip: try the #54, a blend of both the pastrami and corned beef in one sandwich. And don’t skip the rest of the classic Jewish deli menu – it’s all very well executed in one of the best day-time dining rooms in town.

From all of us at Langer’s, thank you, Eater, for your support and for the honor.

Thrillist: Things You Didn’t Know About Dodger Stadium

Garrett Snyder of Thrillist.com just published a great new piece entitled “Things You Didn’t Know About Dodger Stadium,” and in it, he includes this piece of total wisdom:

You can eat lunch at Dodger Stadium when there’s no game

On any day there isn’t an afternoon game, go to the stadium’s main gate and tell them you want to visit the team store. Drive up to parking lot P, park, walk right past the store through the open stadium gates, and take a seat in the upper deck overlooking a completely empty Dodger Stadium. Don’t worry, security isn’t going to tackle you. All this is totally legit. Just unwrap the Langer’s pastrami sandwich you brought with you and enjoy the view, with no one there to bother you.
