Alejandro Marquez: Langer’s Visits Katz’s

Chuck Spence, loyal Langer’s fan, peruses the options at New York’s famous deli, Katz’s, showing LA pride in Langer’s colors

Some things are just too good for words, and this image is one of them. Captured by true Langer’s Deli fan Alejandro Marquez, the image is a total classic depicting a Langer’s Deli fan, far from home, weighing his options at the “other” great pastrami deli, Katz’s of New York.

We absolutely love this image, and hope you do too. Thanks again, Alejandro, for sending it in, and thanks to Chuck for allowing his image (well, his back, anyway) to be portrayed on our site forever!

Jewish Daily Forward: Danyelle Freeman Interview

The Jewish Daily Forward’s “Jew and the Carrot” blog recently featured an interview profile of “Restaurant Girl” Danyelle Freeman.

In this lively coverage of all things Jewish food, Danyelle mentions her favorite Los Angeles Deli as…

Do you still enjoy Jewish food now?

Are you kidding? I love it. I think Jewish food is underrated— I love chopped liver, deli, knishes, derma and babka. I want to write a book on American cuisine next and I’d love to include Jewish food.

Any favorite delis in NY or LA?

I like Langer’s in LA so much. I think in New York, Katz’s is probably my favorite for pastrami. I also love smoked fish, so Russ and Daughters and Sable’s and Barney Greengrass in New York are all great.

ShalomLife: Adam Gertler Interview

Canadian Jewish lifestyle blog ShalomLife.com recently published an interview with Food Network’s Adam Gertler, who is a Friend of Langer’s for many reasons, not the least of which was his hosting of our “Best Thing I Ever Ate” segment during their “Between Bread” episode – the highest-viewed portrayal of Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant in our 64-year history.

Adam is now hosting Kid in a Candy Store on Food Network, and during his interview he had nice things to say about Langer’s:

Since you’re a food lover, I have to ask: what’s your favourite Jewish dish?

I think our greatest contributions to the culinary world are appetizing and deli. I love few things on earth more than an everything bagel, slightly scooped, smeared with scallion cream cheese, topped with lox, tomato, red onion and a sunny side up egg and maybe a slice of muenster. Best breakfast sandwich ever.

As a native New Yorker I have great fondness for Katz’s and 2nd Ave Deli, but as a Californian transplant, my favourite is Langer’s deli, which I spoke about on Best Thing I Ever Ate. They have the best pastrami on the planet next to my own, which we used to serve at the Smoked Joint in Philadelphia. Now that our restaurant isn’t around, Langer’s rules the pastrami kingdom.

Thank you, Adam! See you soon at Langer’s.

Omnivorous: Langer’s Deli

Food blog Omnivorous by Spencer H. Gray recently did a piece on visit to Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant, and it’s terrific:

Langer’s pastrami is moist, flavorful, and ultra-tender. Great flavor from the corning brine add notes of coriander and peppercorn. In a sandwich the pastrami is rather thickly cut but so yielding you never get any gristly bits or dry areas; it is uniformly delicious. To best appreciate the pastrami’s flavor I’d recommend it simple, just on their wonderful rye bread with a slather of deli mustard. However, the best sandwich I’ve eaten there is the Number 19, a delightful concoction of their homemade pastrami, swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing. The steamed rye bread is moist and delicious with a crisp crust, the coleslaw adds sweetness and a vegetable crunch, and the generous Russian dressing adds a nice tang that counterbalances the fatty richness of that fabulous pastrami. It is the bomb!

There’s even coverage of our side salad! It’s worth a read, and the pictures are terrific (taken with an iPhone, no less).

Thank you, Spencer! Click here to read the complete story at Omnivorous.

TasterTotsLA.com: Langer’s Deli

Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant recently received a nice review from the “kid friendly – adult fare” restaurant review site TasterTotsLA.com. The site focuses on coverage of restaurants that are great for parents with children, yet retain adult-oriented cuisine – sounds like Langer’s!

While not its signature dish, Langer’s happens to be for us L.A.’s reigning champ of crinkle-cut fries…

Why mess around? Most of us are there for the #19. Or however way you like your world famous pastrami. For women who plan to give birth at Good Samaritan Hospital nearby, I politely suggest you have one of these ready. This beloved sandwich has proved restorative and essential.

It’s a great and unique review and well worth your click to read the complete story located here.
