Norm Langer Donation Supports Heart of LA’s Urban Fruit Trail Initiative

Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant owner Norm Langer is proud to be supporting Heart of Los Angeles’ Urban Fruit Trail initiative – planting fruit trees in City parks that will provide both shade and sustenance to passersby.

Norm heard of the devastating news that Heart of LA’s first planting – performed by its child members – had been vandalized by unknown assailants. “That someone would destroy this kind of thing is absolutely beyond my comprehension,” said Norm. He was moved to make a donation to help fund the replanting of the vandalized trees, and will also be taking part in a planting at MacArthur Park, directly across from Langer’s Deli, on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at 11AM.

Norm Langer appeared this morning on KTLA 5 Morning News, discussing the now-legendary gentleman’s bet between LAPD Chief Charlie Beck and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton over the Stanley Cup Finals. He brought in food for the entire crew (including hosts Frank Buckley and Jessica Holmes) and we gave away 10 $100 Langer’s Gift Certificates by texting “Langers” to 515151(or enter at ktla.com/contests). Our sincere thanks to everyone at KTLA for hosting Norm so graciously.

WiseBread.com: $20 in Los Angeles: The 16 Best Ways to Spend It

Max Wong, writing for WiseBread.com, has just published a terrific article that really outdoes the “Best of” genre in many respects, entitled, “$20 in Los Angeles: The 16 Best Ways to Spend It.” We’re honored that Max chose to include Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant as part of his 16 selections; just check out her great writing:

David Sax’s book, “Save the Deli,” was the shot heard round the kosher meat world when he stated that, “Brace yourself New York, because what I am about to write is definitely go to piss a lot of you off, but it needs to be said: Los Angeles has become America’s premier deli city.” At the heart of the ensuing kerfuffle was Sax’s proclamation that Langer’s Deli is home to the finest pastrami sandwich in the universe, much less the country. According to Sax, “Los Angeles is the example to the rest of the nation of how a deli can ultimately stay relevant.”

New Yorker foodies, were, of course outraged. Subsequently, everyone from Pulitzer Prize winning food critic Jonathan Gold to the James Beard Foundation have weighed in favor of Langer’s. Native New Yorker Nora Ephron, who went on record in the pages of The New Yorker that Langer’s serves the best pastrami in America, finally did a side-by-side taste-off between Langer’s and Katz’s, the iconic New York deli to quiet East Coast sore losers. Langer’s handily won the re-match.

Suck it New York.

NYPD Commissioner Bratton Honors his Stanley Cup Finals Bet with LAPD Chief Beck

NYPD Commissioner William Bratton honors his Stanley Cup Finals bet with LAPD Chief Charlie Beck! Congratulations to all, especially the 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings! Go Kings Go!

On Saturday morning, Bratton signaled his intent to honor the bet. He tweeted a photo of Katz’s Deli in New York and tagged Beck’s Twitter account.

“Do you take your pastrami sandwich with or without mustard? Congrats!” Bratton tweeted.

Beck’s response, after telling Bratton he was looking forward to having lunch again soon, was to tweet a picture of L.A.’s most-revered pastrami sandwich, the Number 19 at Langer’s Deli.

The sandwich – tender, hand-sliced pastrami, cool Russian dressing, crisp cole slaw and Swiss cheese between two slices of pillow-soft, crunchy-crusted twice-baked rye bread – is a favorite of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Sandwich King Jeff Mauro Names Langer’s Pastrami on Rye his #1 USA Sandwich

All of us at Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant are thrilled that Food Network’s Sandwich King Jeff Mauro has named our pastrami on rye as his #1 sandwich in the entire United States in a recent Yahoo Travel article.

This is my benchmark for all great sandwiches. The country’s best house-made pastrami combined with the country’s best rye bread. Order it hand-cut with a schmear of some deli mustard, and leave it be. With a side of extra-crispy fries and three ice teas, this is my favorite meal in the world. It’s simplicity at its finest, and in a world of over-stuffed, over-complicated sandwiches, Langer’s keeps it real with nothing but craftsmanship, history, and a dab of mustard.
