FamilyVacationHub.com: 10 Los Angeles Classic Restaurants

FamilyVacationHub.com has assembled a great list of ten LA-area classic restaurants that are family-friendly locations, and they lead off with Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant:

The reason Langer’s has made it all these years, is its delicious deli food, which is not easy to come by in Los Angeles. In my honest opinion, I think their Pastrami sandwich is the best I have ever had and I grew up on Deli food. The Pastrami is very tender and their twice baked rye bread is crunchy on the crust and soft as can be on the bread. If you are not a purist (pastrami and deli mustard), they have a fantastic Pastrami sandwich (#19) with Cole Slaw, Swiss cheese and Russian style dressing. Add in a side of Potato Pancakes and a Cream Soda and you are set. Langer’s menu offers up a large variety of traditional Delicatessen fare, so everyone in the family should find something to their liking.

UnorthodoxFoodie.com: Langer’s Luscious #19

Kimberly Nichols, who runs the terrific food blog UnorthodoxFoodie.com, penned this review of our famous #19 hot pastrami sandwich back in December of 2013, but we just discovered it on Twitter (where you can follow us here). It’s fantastic writing! Click through to check it all out, but here’s a sample:

If ever there were a place to belly up to the bar, it was here, where old-fashioned and generously padded, tufted brown faux-leather seats swiveled with a direct view into the glass enclosed counters revealing cooks in white smocks and paper hats carving up smoking hot roasts of pastrami and corned beef, smoke curling up and away into the ethers where cans of tuna, sardines and matzo flour sat aligned on wooden shelves. There are no glass displays of overstuffed baked goods or large rows of bread loaves or cutesy, framed sayings on the walls. It’s a simple joint where people come for that plate of bread and meat accentuated with none other than a simple pickle slice, enough to fuel them up on their way from one place to another. An institution serving lunch to the common man one rapid forkful at a time.

TheDailyMeal.com: America’s 10 Best Jewish Delis

Popular food blog TheDailyMeal.com has published a new piece entitled “America’s 10 Best Jewish Delis” – and Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant made the list! From their description of Langer’s:

The deli is known best for its #19 sandwich made with hot pastrami, cole slaw, a slice of Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on hot rye bread. What makes the rye bread so special is the process of double-baking. The bread is received from the bakery, and then re-baked at 350 degrees for 30 minutes to give it a crispy crust. It also has its own take on matzoh ball soup which includes chicken, noodles, matzoh balls and vegetables served in a warm pot.

Norm Langer on ABC7 Discussing Beef Prices

[av_video src=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hLaaZh4BF0′ format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′]

Our thanks to ABC7’s Rudabeh Shahbazi who did a great job reporting on beef prices for yesterday’s 430PM newscast – check it out here.

Los Angeles Times: Beef Prices Hit All-Time High in U.S.

Jerry Haines, general manager of R.C. Provision in Burbank, holds pastrami that's ready for shipping. The company, which supplies Pink's, Langer's Delicatessen and other eateries, is struggling as beef prices have hit a record high in the U.S. (Al Seib, Los Angeles Times / March 28, 2014)

David Pierson and Tiffany Hsu of the Los Angeles Times report today on the biggest emerging news in the food industry – that of skyrocketing beef prices. Norm Langer of Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant is quoted in the article regarding the impact on menu prices from the rising cost of pastrami and corned beef, staples in the deli business.

The swelling prices are roiling the beef supply chain from rancher to restaurant.

Norm Langer managed to go two years without raising prices at his famed Westlake delicatessen.

But last week, he reluctantly began printing new menus showing a 50-cent increase for sandwiches at his 67-year-old restaurant.

Langer accepts it’s one of the perils of business when your bread and butter happens to be corned beef and pastrami. But he fears he may have to raise prices again, driving away customers.

“No beef, no delicatessen. That’s the bottom line,” Langer said after a typically frenetic lunch service. “Jewish delis aren’t vegetarian, they’re based on corned beef and pastrami. Things are beyond my control. With the price increase, I hope my customers are tolerant.”

Langer said beef prices are the main reason his wholesale food costs have risen 45% in the last two years — much of it passed from his longtime supplier, R.C. Provision Inc.

Movoto.com: These 15 Los Angeles Restaurants Will Blow The Taste Buds Out Of Your Mouth

Brian Wu of fun real estate blog Movoto.com has published a great piece entitled “These 15 Los Angeles Restaurants Will Blow The Taste Buds Out Of Your Mouth.” And we’re thrilled that Langer’s was named as part of this elite collection:

Okay people, this is the real deal. Langer’s is the deli that makes America proud. It may be a throwback to an old diner from the 80s, but the food makes up for it. After downing the best ever pastrami sandwich, some biscuits and gravy, warm apple pie soaked in a savory brandy sauce and maybe some coffee to top it off, you’ll need a 7-hour nap.
