Eater: The 38 Essential Los Angeles Restaurants, Summer 2019

Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant is proud to be included once again in the Eater 38 Essential Los Angeles Restaurants awards, this time for Summer 2019. It is a great honor to be included.

Yes, the No. 19 pastrami sandwich is an amazing sandwich, but the pure pastrami on house-based rye is simplicity at its best. There’s a reason why people make pilgrimages to try this place’s pastrami and even corned beef: There is no better version anywhere in town. Pro tip: Try the No. 54, a blend of both the pastrami and corned beef in one sandwich. And don’t skip the rest of the classic Jewish deli menu — it’s all very well executed in one of the best daytime dining rooms in town.

LA TACO: The Rogue 99, Our Essential LA Restaurant Guide

The fine folks at LA Taco have compiled their Rogue 99, a list of their essential Los Angeles Restaurants. We are honored and grateful to be included in this important list:

A very brief but entirely correct response — panic — ensued before Norm Langer assured everyone they planned to stay, sale or no sale. Indeed, if any misguided developer even hinted at the idea of shutting down Langer’s, they’d have to contend with an entire city roaring in its defense, not only because it is one of L.A.’s most cherished institutions, but also because it is home to the greatest pastrami sandwich in the country, full stop.

beef brisket dip sandwich with a pickle at Langer's Deli Langer’s Deli – Best Jewish deli food has a new article up entitled, “Langer’s Deli – Best Jewish deli food,” featuring your favorite Jewish deli! Here’s an excerpt:

New York Times Magazine once ranked Langers’s corned beef and pastrami as the best in America (quite a compliment coming from a New York-based media organization). Indeed, their specialty is corned beef, Swiss, coleslaw, and Russian dressing on toasted rye. I don’t love corned beef or pastrami but even I indulge in both at Langer’s. My favorite is the beef brisket dip sandwich and my second favorite is the turkey and Swiss on toasted rye.

For those seeking an adventure or just a great Jewish deli lunch, I highly recommend Langer’s Deli.

Canberra Times: Los Angeles – seeing stars in the strangest of places

From Australia’s Michael Harry of The Canberra Times comes this terrific article that includes Langer’s Delicatessen as a must-stop for visitors to Los Angeles:

A neighbourhood favourite since 1947, Langer’s is the quintessential American deli. The steamy room, with its formica booths and sassy staff, is most famous for its #19 sandwich, a towering brick of juicy pastrami, house-made coleslaw, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese on seeded rye bread served with a hefty spear of pickle. Remember, you can always ask them to wrap up what you don’t finish and take it back to the hotel.

Just a great article! Please click here to read the whole thing. Thank you, Canberra Times and Michael!

Los Angeles Times: My father worked at Langer’s Deli for the last 50 years. This is our story.

Bea Barajas wrote a beautiful tribute to her father, Ascencion “Chon” Barajas, who just retired as our dishwasher, a position he held continuously since 1968. The story appears in the Los Angeles Times:

Pop joined Langer’s in 1968. He was 27 years old. He has decided to retire. His last day was Dec. 31. He worked there for half a century; he is now 78.
He has always spoken highly of the Langer family, and Langer’s has been there to help with life changes for him and his daughter — me — for her entire life, with sandwiches and memories and support. I love that Langer’s has provided for him and us in many ways other than in a monetary sense — it is a place that will always be cherished by the Barajas family.
My sisters and I were, of course, extremely worried about this day. But, as he was there for us throughout whatever was happening in our lives, my sisters and i will be there for him as he closes this long chapter of his life.
