UnorthodoxFoodie.com: Langer’s Luscious #19

Kimberly Nichols, who runs the terrific food blog UnorthodoxFoodie.com, penned this review of our famous #19 hot pastrami sandwich back in December of 2013, but we just discovered it on Twitter (where you can follow us here). It’s fantastic writing! Click through to check it all out, but here’s a sample:

If ever there were a place to belly up to the bar, it was here, where old-fashioned and generously padded, tufted brown faux-leather seats swiveled with a direct view into the glass enclosed counters revealing cooks in white smocks and paper hats carving up smoking hot roasts of pastrami and corned beef, smoke curling up and away into the ethers where cans of tuna, sardines and matzo flour sat aligned on wooden shelves. There are no glass displays of overstuffed baked goods or large rows of bread loaves or cutesy, framed sayings on the walls. It’s a simple joint where people come for that plate of bread and meat accentuated with none other than a simple pickle slice, enough to fuel them up on their way from one place to another. An institution serving lunch to the common man one rapid forkful at a time.

Didn’t we say it was amazing writing?! Click here to read the entire piece. Thank you, Kimberly! Please say hello next time you are in! – The Langers

Jarred Reviews: Langer’s Delicatessen

Food and travel blogger Jarred from Montreal recently paid his first visit to Langer’s Delicatessen. Having grown up with smoked meat sandwiches in Montreal, Jarred is familiar with the pastrami family, but nothing could have prepared him for his first Langer’s experience:

I’ll always remember that time I sunk my teeth into my first #19 at Langer’s.

Everyone apparently knows the best pastrami or corned beef sandwich there is. I’ve been engrossed in back and forth’s of personal bias over which deli makes the best sandwich several times with people. When I went to LA, I heard that Langer’s is to L.A. what Schwartz’s is to Montreal…

Then finally it came…Langer’s most popular sandwich…The tender, succulent and perfectly seasoned juicy pieces of thickly cut meat piled high, not as much as Carnegie but there was still a great amount. The cole slaw is an original addition, and crucial in making this legendary sandwich, as well as that dressing, that perfect dressing that really just completes everything. I’m not even sure if I noticed the cheese, as there was so much taste from everything else that was going on. When you have pastrami that’s as juicy as steak, it’s no wonder.

It’s a terrific review for which we are grateful, and one you should check out both for the prose as well as the imagery. Click here to read the complete review, and to browse Jarred’s well-done site.

Thank you, Jarred! – The Langers

DailyTrojan.com: Learning A Lot From Cooking TV Shows

The Daily Trojan’s website – written and produced by students at the University of Southern California – recently published a new “Gingersnaps” entry by columnist Mimi Honeycutt, focusing on her recent intake of television cooking shows. In it, she finds a great Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant mention from her review of “The Best Thing I Ever Ate”:

Many of the restaurants are in New York City, but don’t discount Los Angeles for eating options. The legendary Number 19 from Langer’s Deli and the Brazilian Chicken Pot Pie from Wood Spoon have both made an appearance.

Impress all your friends when you suggest a seemingly random restaurant for a Saturday lunch. Most of the dishes do not actually come from fancy restaurants, so even broke college kids can enjoy fine dining.

MSN.com: 15 Essential Sandwiches

Microsoft megaportal MSN.com has published a great new story on “15 Essential Sandwiches,” and Langer’s hot pastrami is fortunate enough to be included in the recount:

Pastrami reigns coastal. In Los Angeles, Langer’s is king, where spicy, peppery beef owes its mythic tenderness to a long stint in the steamer. The result ends up on a number of sandwiches, but No. 19 — pastrami topped with Swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing on double-baked rye — is the gold standard for Jewish delicacies in L.A.

Elsie’s Blog: Langer’s After the Street Food Fest

Elsie’s Blog, a photography online journal, visited Langer’s this weekend after a difficult time at the LA Street Food Fest (mobile trucks gathered in downtown LA for a street food fair). We’re glad Elsie came by:

I’ve been looking forward to the LA Street Food Fest for the past month & it was finally yesterday….Arriving about mid-way into the event, it was so over-crowded, it looked like a swap meet….Instead, Lawrence & I went to have a real lunch at Langer’s nearby….
